Rahmenkunst provides a historical overview of four hundred years of picture frames: from the ornate to the miniature, all of the genres are represented. The spectrum ranges from sixteenth-century cassetta to the frames of the Classicistic and Empire periods. Special attention is paid to outstanding frames that have a distinguished style or place in history as well as gallery and showcase frames. Included are numerous illustrations and examples from the Green Gallery at the Munich Residence; from the castles and palaces of Schleissheim, Nymphenburg, Ansbach, Bayreuth, Mainz, Passau, and Würzburg; and from collections in Düsseldorf, Mannheim, and Zweibrücken.
