An intricately decorated snuff bottle was once a necessary accoutrement for upper-class men of Qing dynasty China—a mark of sophistication and status that, though newly introduced in the 1640s, drew on centuries of Chinese craftsmanship. This catalog showcases 46 of these exquisite glass objects—the collection of San Francisco jeweler Stephen Thal, donated to the Seattle Art Museum—many of which are delicately painted on the inside by artists who could only insert their brushes down through the narrow neck.
