Ten tijde van Brezjnev was Andrei Filipov de meest befaamde dirigent in de Sovjet-Unie. Omdat hij weigerde de joodse muzikanten uit het orkest te zetten, werd hij op het hoogtepunt van zijn carriere ontslagen.
Dertig jaar later werkt hij nog steeds voor het Bolshoi Orkest maar nu in de schoonmaakploeg. Op een avond ziet Andrei toevallig een fax waarin het Theatre du Chatelet het orkest officieel uitnodigt voor een concert in Parijs.
