This historic audio was recorded in 1972 at the 92nd Street Y Poetry Center in New York City, where Anais Nin read excerpts from her diary, which she began in 1914 at the age of eleven. After her recital, she answered questions from her audience.

Dylan Thomas worked on Under Milk Wood for eight years before he finally delivered the draft to the BBC in September 1953. This was broadcast by the BBC in January 1954, with Richard Burton being assigned the role of First Voice. Burton's role is still as fresh today as when originally recorded - the fiftieth anniversary recording incorporated new actors alongside the original by Richard Burton.

Dylan Thomas's reading on this recording elevated A Child's Christmas in Wales from casually dismissed prose, written by a poet to keep the wolf from the door, to a new genre of literature to be performed. Some of Thomas's most well-known poems are included in this recording - the first ever made by him.

Because Dylan Thomas often wrote as much for the sound of his poetry as for its meaning, he was extraordinarily well-suited to the task of interpreting his own works on audio, the more so for his unforgettably rich voice and dramatic style. The poems in this collection are those that he most often chose for his famous public readings and can therefore be considered the ones Dylan Thomas himself wanted us to know.

Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea on 27 October 1914. In 1930 Dylan began his Notebooks which contained the draft workings of most of his poetry published before 1946. On leaving school, 1931, he joined the South Wales Daily Post, but also, a local theatre group, and this training undoubtedly gave him a greater appreciation of the sound of language which marks his poetry.

Original New York Complete Recording

Although conceived as a radio play, Under Milk Wood has appeared in many guises. Before the historic first broadcast which was transmitted posthumously on 25 January 1954, six actors -inlcuding Thomas- had performed a public reading of the play on 14 May 1953 at the Poetry Center in New York, although Thomas was revising the text and preparing it for publication when he died.
